Day 7: Billygoat Bay, Helmcken Island

Day 7: Billygoat Bay, Helmcken Island

Thursday, June 20 We woke to gale force winds on Johnstone Strait and rain on our deck — decided to stay another day. It rained most of the day so we knitted and read and napped. The 3G reception is good here which means we can phone and email and play online Scrabble. A single common merganser swam by early in the day and a group of river otters were out in the middle chowing down on something — probably…

Day 6: Billygoat Bay, Helmcken Island

Day 6: Billygoat Bay, Helmcken Island

Wednesday, June 19 Ron got up at five o’clock this morning to check the marine weather forecast. There was a gale force wind warning on Johnstone Strait. That kind of wind over an opposing tide can make the strait quite choppy — uncomfortable and slow for us — so he decided we’d stay put. A good choice because this is a beautiful anchorage and it gave us a chance to go ashore and poke around a bit. The forest on…

Day 5: Small Inlet to Billygoat Bay, Helmcken Island

Day 5: Small Inlet to Billygoat Bay, Helmcken Island

Tuesday, June 18 Another huge electrical storm last night! Ron got up at 5:30 this morning to catch the end of the ebb tide and to avoid the afternoon westerly on Johnstone Strait. Our intention was to get to Billygoat Bay on Helmcken Island if possible (in the middle of lower Johnstone Strait, slightly east of Kelsey Bay), but if wind against tide made conditions nasty, we’d peel off into Nodales or Blind Channel. The wind never materialized, and after…

Day 4: Henry Bay to Small Inlet, Kanish Bay

Day 4: Henry Bay to Small Inlet, Kanish Bay

Monday, June 17 Wow, huge electrical storm last night just as it was getting dark. The flashes were bright and deafening rumbles followed within several seconds, so the storm was close. Later, when the thunder and lightning passed on and we were asleep, a (not predicted) northwest wind came up. We weren’t anticipating wind from the north and we were not in the best place to have the two boats rafted up in those conditions. The resulting movement and noise…

Day 3: False Bay to Henry Bay, Denman Island

Day 3: False Bay to Henry Bay, Denman Island

Sunday, June 16 We were underway fairly early in the morning to take advantage of the ebb tide which helped carry us up the strait to Denman Island. We tucked Snug into the protection of the island in Henry Bay, anticipating light southeasterlies overnight. Ron and I went ashore and walked to the end of Sandy Island, a marine park. We’ve never stopped there before and were impressed by the biological diversity—lots of wild flowers and different bird calls. The centre…

Day 2: Nanaimo to False Bay, Lasqueti Island

Day 2: Nanaimo to False Bay, Lasqueti Island

Saturday, June 15 Left Nanaimo in the morning after recalibrating the all-important, newly repaired auto-pilot in Departure Bay. Brother Rick aboard Curlew followed close behind us. We were bucking light northwest winds and an ebb tide, so progress was slow, but we anchored in False Bay at the top of Lasqueti Island in time for a paddle around the harbour before happy hour. A merganser mom was herding a gaggle of tiny, fuzzy chicks around the rocky islets in the…

Day 1: Degnan Bay to Nanaimo

Day 1: Degnan Bay to Nanaimo
